Privacy policy

MountainPeak publishes walking route surveys. We do not run user accounts, we do not sell anything, and we do not ask you for personal information in order to read a route plate. This page explains the limited data that is collected when you visit, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Information you send us. If you email us — for example to report an error in a survey, to ask about a route, or to request a correction — we receive your email address and whatever you write in the message. We keep that correspondence only as long as it takes to answer you and to log the correction, and we do not add you to any mailing list.

Information collected automatically. Like almost every website, our servers and our hosting provider record standard request data: the pages you requested, the time of the request, the referring page, an approximate geographic region derived from your IP address, your browser and operating system type, and the IP address itself. This is used for security, for diagnosing faults, and for aggregate statistics about which surveys people read. It is not used to build a profile of you as an individual, and we do not attempt to link it to any identity.

Information we do not collect. We do not collect your precise location, we do not ask for your name, and we do not operate any login. If you use a route survey to plan a walk, that planning happens on your own device.

2. Cookies and similar technologies

MountainPeak itself does not set tracking cookies. Small amounts of browser storage may be used to remember display preferences, and those values stay on your device. However, third-party services embedded on this site — principally advertising and, where used, analytics — may set their own cookies or read identifiers in your browser. You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings; the site will continue to work, though some third-party features may behave differently.

3. Third-party advertising and Google AdSense

This site is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense and may use other third-party advertising networks to serve ads when you visit.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites on the internet.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. This is often referred to as the DoubleClick DART cookie and the related advertising identifiers.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings at adssettings.google.com.
  • You can also opt out of personalised advertising from many third-party vendors at aboutads.info/choices, and in the EU at youronlinechoices.eu.
  • Where required by law, a consent message is presented before advertising cookies are set, and you may change or withdraw that consent at any time through the consent link shown in the message.

We do not control third-party vendors' cookies or the data they collect. Their handling of your data is governed by their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to read Google's advertising policy documentation if you want the detail.

4. Analytics and statistics

We look at aggregate traffic statistics — how many people read a given survey, which pages are popular, which countries visitors come from, and which search terms brought them. These statistics are reported in aggregate. Where we use a third-party analytics provider, that provider may set cookies and process your IP address; where possible we configure the service to anonymise or truncate IP addresses, and we do not enable advertising-personalisation features in analytics.

5. Third-party links

Route surveys routinely link out to land managers, national park authorities, weather services, permit systems and public transport operators. Once you follow one of those links you are on someone else's site, and their privacy practices apply. We are not responsible for the content or the data handling of any external site we link to.

6. Your rights: GDPR and CCPA

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and for what purpose, the right to request deletion, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. MountainPeak does not sell personal information.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected] with enough detail for us to identify what you are asking about. We will respond within the period required by the applicable law. If you are asking about data held by an advertising vendor rather than by us, we will point you to that vendor's own request mechanism, because we cannot act on their behalf.

7. Children

This site is written for adults planning walks and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Data retention and security

Server request logs are rotated and deleted on a rolling basis. Email correspondence is kept only as long as needed for the purpose it was sent. We use HTTPS across the site and restrict access to any backend systems, but no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change, and the "Last updated" date at the top will change with it. Material changes will be reflected on this page rather than announced elsewhere. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
